Sigma AF 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM

Test op een 50D:

The new Sigma AF 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM is a refreshing alternative in the long-ignored standard AF lens market.
The lens is fairly big and heavy due to unusually big glass elements but thanks to the design efforts it is already capable of delivering sharp images straight from f/1.4 and the resolution is impressive at medium aperture settings.
However, expect some softer results at very close focus distances at large aperture settings.
Distortions, vignetting as well as CAs aren't overly relevant in field conditions.
The bokeh can be a bit nervous at f/1.4 but it's smoother from f/2 onwards.
The build quality of the lens is excellent. The HSM AF drive is very fast and virtually silent.
Unfortunately the lens suffers from residual spherical aberrations (focus shifts) when stopping down which may spoil the game at times.

Die focus shifts zijn precies mijn ervaring met dit objectief; uitermate irritant en onbetrouwbaar. I
k heb hem daarom weggedaan en ben bij de Canon 50 1.4 gebleven.

Het ligt aan het basisontwerp.
Voor zover ik weet hebben alle objectieven van het "Gauss type" er last van, ongeacht het merk.

Vol open is er niets aan de hand

Vanaf de 50D is er met Micro Focus Adjust wat te doen als je, bijvoorbeeld, op f/2 wilt schieten.

Voor andere diafragma's zou je een lijstje kunnen maken en die correctie kunnen aanbrengen.

Ligt die focus-shift puur aan Gauss type dan?
Ik meen eens gelezen te hebben dat het optreed bij flinke lichtsterkte, diafragma groter dan f/1.8

ik gebruik dit lensje op een 1dIIn en 5dII, op beide geen last van misfocus, het is een ragscherp exemplaar wat gewoon echt strakke kleurijke plaatjes aflevert

Focus shift is iets anders dan misfocus.
Het laatste heeft te maken met de kwaliteit van de autofocus, focus shift is een eigenschap van het ontwerp.

Dan heb je echt pech gehad en hadden ze last van front/backfocus.

@avandijk: Ik begin het te begrijpen (als de volgende test op een 5DII klopt):

The new Sigma AF 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM showed pretty impressive results in our APS-C review.
However, it's not quite as convincing on full format cameras.
The center quality of the lens is certainly fine and even great from f/2 onwards.
Unfortunately the border & corner performance is rather disappointing.
It's downright soft at large apertures and never really better than good even at the very best setting (f/8).
The amount of vignetting is quite heavy at f/1.4 but that's rather typical for such lenses.
If you stop down to f/2.8 this will not be a real issue anymore though.
The lens produces moderate barrel distortions which is a tad more than the standard in this lens class.
Lateral CAs are very well controlled and not really field relevant.
The bokeh is quite decent although not perfect either.
A real highlight of the lens is certainly its build quality.
Unlike most 50mm f/1.4 it features a metal body and a good focus ring.
The HSM AF drive is very fast and virtually silent.
Unfortunately the lens suffers from residual spherical aberrations (focus shifts) when stopping down so accurate focusing can be tricky.
